People need to do a deep cut in "personal emissions" to keep the world from reaching critical tipping points, such as melting of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica. To stay below that threshold, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by by 80% by 2050.
After buildings, transportation is the next largest source of carbon dioxide. A gallon of gasoline adds 19,6 pounds of CO2 to the atmosphere, a big part of our daily allowance. At the same time an EPA study estimated that greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles could increase 80% over the next 50 years.
